1. Position at a venture capital or other private equity firm just below partner. 2. The portion of a loan or bond on which interest is calculated, also known as par or face value.

Example: 1. The principal at the VC firm is on track to be promoted to partner next year. 2. We have an interest-only loan, so we do not repay principal until the term of the loan is over.
