A period in time after which stock options or other securities on a vesting schedule begin to vest. Designed to protect companies from employees who leave after a short tenure.
Example: My vesting schedule has a one-year cliff, at which point 25% of my options vest instantly and then the remainder vest monthly over a 36-month period.
