409a valuation

noun

A private company valuation that has been established by a financial professional. Because startups are not publicly traded, 409a valuations are required so that companies can value their stock for tax purposes. Refers to Internal Revenue Code section 409A.

Example: The strike price on my employee stock options corresponds to the company's 409a valuation at the time I was hired.
